The thesis is devoted to the contrastive research of the structure and semantics of the phraseological units which represent negative emotions in the English and Ukrainian languages with the purpose of pointing out the common and differential characteristics in conceptualizing negative emotions and their verbalization in the corresponding national models of the world. The criteria have been developed for the selection of the phraseological units denoting negative emotions from the general phraseological stock of the language. The conceptosphere of the negative emotions has been described and the peculiarities of their verbalization have been analyzed, the universal and ethno-specific features of the verbalization of this important fragment of human existence by representatives of different language communities have been distinguished. In the course of the research, the semantic classification of the phraseological units has been elaborated, as a result of which the phraseological units have been classified into semantic groups and subgroups, which reveal different aspects of experiencing the negative emotions. The phraseological units have been classified according to the type of emotiveness. The research also considers the universal and specific structural and semantic peculiarities of the phraseological units denoting negative emotions in the languages of diverse structure. The role of phraseological components in the process of the phraseological nomination of negative emotions has been considered, the productivity of the components in the contrastive languages has been established, which reflect universal and nationally predetermined features of the emotional experience representation by two language models of the world.
