Essay

The thesis focuses on the study of structural, communicative and discursive features of emotive utterances of the personages in American drama of the 20th century. It has been proved that the key factor that determines the syntactic and lexical peculiarities of an emotive utterance is its pragmatic function, i.e. the speaker’s intention to express his/ her emotional state or attitude to the communicative situation as well as produce an effect on the interlocutor. The systemic analysis of the main structural varieties of the emotive utterances as a means of explicating speakers’ communicative intentions has been fulfilled in the research. Emotive utterances are treated as emotive speech acts of monoillocutionary or polyillocutionary type. The latter is subdivided into emotive representatives, emotive interrogatives and emotive directives. A set of communicative strategies and tactics involving emotive utterances has been defined. Typical emotive indicators of the tactics have been singled out.
