Essay

The thesis focuses on the study of semantic and functional grammatical specificity of identification and characterization predicates in English biographical texts of encyclopedia entries in "The New Encyclop?dia Britannica" and "The Encyclopedia Americana". The research showed that Action, Relation and Identification form the semantic pivot of a biographical text information structure. Within predicate classes the semantic groups of the predicates have been singled out and described. The factors that predetermine semantic and functional grammatical characteristics of the predicates under study have been revealed. The actant sets of the predicates have been examined. The specificity of the predicate representation in the sentence surface structure has been investigated, and the correlation of semantic and surface structures of the sentence has been established.
