Essay

The paper deals with the individuality of the conceptual and verbal picture of the world of a German Novel Laureate Gunter Grass. The aim - to establish the sources and the functions of irony in the individual picture of the world of the author. Methods used are descriptive, interpretational, quantitative. The Novelty of the research lies in the differention of irony as a stylistic device limited to a definite fragment of the text and irony as an overall effect of the text, both viewed from the cognitive perspective. Can be used in teaching appropriate courses in linguistics and literature.
