The work is devoted to set grammatical constructions (SGC) with modal meaning in modern Japanese. As a result of the syntactical, grammatical and morphological analysis it becomes possible to define SGC as constructions with different component structure, levels of grammaticalization and ways of connecting to notional parts of speech, which function as auxiliary parts of compound predicates. From the semantic viewpoint the SGC are unified by the ability to indicate modality of an utterance. Grouping of SGC by their modal meanings we single out categories of necessity, possibility, optativity, epistemic necessity and possibility, probability and evidentiality. Emotional assessment is referred to the periphery of modality. We analyze such features of SGC as the ability to switch over from one modal category to another; the usage in different spheres of the language; restrictions as for using with different person; ways of formation of tense forms and forms of negation; formation of opposite modal meanings.
