Object of research: English compounds of direct and indirect nomination. A research objective: distinguishing of social-discursive features of direct and indirect compound nomination in the English fiction discourse. Research methods: structure analysis, onomasiological analysis, component analysis, valency analysis of compound adjectives, stylistic analysis, elements of etymological, conceptual and discourse-analysis, synergetic approach, quantitative analysis. Results, novelty: systematic analysis of compounds has been shown against the background of functional and communicative text stylistics; appropriateness of the emergence of contextual connotations has been determined; the systematic manifestation of compounding and its status in the English word-formation system as well as factors of hopeful accepting of nonce-coinage into standard English have been determined. Use sphere: the results of the research contribute to the compound nomination theory, that enlightens communicative-stylistic functions of compounds and author’s idiostyle as well as ways of enlarging of the standard English with compound words.
