Essay

The object of research is the "German vector" of foreign policy of the United States and Great Britain in the second half of the twentieth century. The aim of the thesis - to analyze the process of developing and implementing of the U.S. and Britain policy concerning Germany unification in 1989-1990. Methods: historical, logical, methods of ascent from the abstract to the concrete and from concrete to abstract, using generals methods of analysis, synthesis, generalization, comparison, induction and deduction, historical comparative, historical genetic, historical systematic, problem-chronological, diachronic methods. The scientific novelty. The author developed a periodization of the evolution of the US and UK policy concerning German unification in 1989-1990; analyzed the influence of the president, Congress, NSC on policy-making concerning German unification; highlighted the contradiction between the Prime Minister and Foreign Office of Great Britain in developing the course of solving the "German question"; determined the influence of personal characteristics of the U.S. President George H. Bush and British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on management style and decision-making in foreign policy in the context of the problem; compared official and public American and British opinion concerning German unification; introduced to the scientific use a number of unpublished sources that have enhanced the knowledge of the political elite positions of the USA and Great Britain with respect to formation unified Germany. The practical significance of the thesis: The main provisions of the thesis can be the basis for further study of the international settlement of German unification, the fundamental study of the history of German unification, in studies of U.S. British history, the history of international relations in the second half of the twentieth century. Thesis may be involved in developing and teaching university courses on "Modern History of Europe and North America", "History of the USA", "History of Great Britain", in writing school and university textbooks.Sphere of use: higher educational institutions.
