Essay

The object of the research is lexical nonsense, its forming and functioning in English poetic discourse. The subject of the research is ontological characteristics of nonsense, lexical, semantic and functional properties of lexical nonsense in English poetic discourse. The aim of the research is to define lexical nonsense and its structural, semantic and functional characteristics. The following methods are used: phonemic analysis, structural analysis, derivational analysis, contextual and interpretative analysis, sound symbolism analysis, functional and semantic analysis, quantitative analysis. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that the notions of verbal and lexical nonsense have been defined for the first time; structural varieties of verbal nonsense and those of lexical nonsense have been distinguished; interpretational characteristics of lexical nonsense have been analyzed as well as its using as a means of exerting expressive, emotional, axiological and aesthetic influence. The theoretical significance of the thesis is defined by its contribution to Semantics, Pragmatics, Discourse Studies and Theory of Genres. The practical significance of the obtained results lies in the fact that they can be used in the courses of English Lexicology, English Stylistics, in the special courses of Pragmatics and Text Linguistics as well as in the research conducted by graduate and post-graduate students.
