Essay

The influence of various doses of ionizing radiation on the composition of semen and spermatozoid physiological activity was investigated. It has been shown that the reduction of sperm quality with the increasing doses of rabbits' irradiation according to the criteria of mobility, the emergence of morphological abnormalities of spermatozoa, ejaculate volume correlated with a decrease in the level of fructose and carnitine, redistribution of prostaglandins E and F contents, as well as the disturbance in enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant systems. Cohort studies of sperm quality and chemical composition of semen from donors from different regions of Ukraine, which significantly differ in terms of radioactive contamination areas, revealed an inter-regional quantitative diversity in antioxidant, energy-providing and chromatin-stabilizing properties of semen as well as fertility potential. It is shown that the simultaneous increase of enzymatic activity of specific and non-specific acrosome enzymes in semen plasma is directly dependent on the reduction of fertility potential of sperm.
