Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the comprehensive analysis of problems and poetics of novels of the prominent American writer Joyce Carol Oates. The thesis researches the directions of critical reception of her texts and the genesis of Oates' creative intentions. It has become relevant for the research to reveal the typical philosophical tendencies of the 20th century literary and aesthetic influences and preferences as well as autobiographical factors. The research contains the description of the influence of the European line of conventionally symbolic realism as well as American romanticism and naturalism. The thorough analysis of Oates' novel "With Shuddering Fall.." proves the presence of the main motives and concepts of existentialism (solitude, alienation, permanent fear, despair, tragic events and fates). The work systematically explores the dominant poetic characteristics of Oates' novels as an entire dynamic system within the context of the postmodernism. In her contemporary fiction Oates continues to experiment with form and genre. To prove this idea the detailed analysis of Oates' recent novel "Blonde" is carried out. The novel refers in a postmodern manner to the life of the actress with reference to what has already been written about her, because it adds a dynamic to our understanding of both the historical woman's life and the text we have used to understand her. Oates' novels are interpreted as a consistent aesthetic phenomenon; the research proves a great importance of her creativity and its significant role in the development of the world literary process in whole and American literature in particular.
