Essay

Modern society is characterized by political and economic shifts which are reflected in the intensity of language processes occurring in all languages. Globalization and the development of the media are fostering research in cross-cultural communication. Auto- and heterostereotypes play an important role in the communication of different nationalities, because they form expectations of communicants. In this context, the perception of the Dutch people in the international community and their understanding of themselves are analyzed, and the ways these stereotypes are displayed in the English and Dutch languages. The results of this study have determined the negative and neutral perception of the Dutch people in the international community, and neutral and positive images of their self-perception.
