Essay

This paper focuses on the genesis, system-structural organization and functioning of the Berlin urban vernacular (henceforth BUV). In the result of the research it was ascertained that the BUV is a form of the national language existence, which takes intermediate position between dialect, colloquial speech and standard language. In the history of the BUV three periods are defined: Low German, Upper German and modern period. The BUV is influenced by German standard language, colloquial speech and dialect, which causes its pluralistic nature and contributes to the dialect leveling.
