Object: genesis of weapons on European territory since ancient times to the middle of the XVII century; goal: is in reviewing the genesis of the sword in Europe from ancient times to the middle of the XVII century as a holistic, dynamic process, taking into account two aspects - functional changes in the design of the sword and the transformation of the symbolic meaning of the sword in the community; methods: historical-genetic, historical, comparative, historical, typological, historical and systematic, source analysis and synthesis, heuristic; results: author analyzed the genesis of the major types of swords in Europe, disclosed the reasons that influenced the origins, changes, and the disappearance of the sword as a separate type of bladed weapon, identified the place of the sword in the complex weapons and armaments in Europe, established the symbolic meaning of the sword in public life of the peoples of Ancient and Medieval Europe; novelty: the model proposed by the author's classification of swords, based on the characteristics of the blade, not the handle, disclosed the causes, nature and course of the genesis of the sword in Europe, the most common color for the Ancient and Medieval European sword types, settled the question of the design features blades of swords and the extent of their prevalence in different historical periods, an integrated approach to the study of the genesis of the sword, which is to consider it not only as an object of study weaponology, but also as an integral part of the historical development of society, introduced into scientific previously unknown material and visual sources; industry: historiography, source and special historical disciplines
