Chernish L. Synthesis, Structural Analysis and Reactivity of Polymantanes

The preparation, structural studies, and functionalizations of diamondoid dimers and oligomers are described in the dissertation. The sterically congested symmetric and none-symmetric saturated diamondoid dimers were synthesized. It was found that dispersion interactions contribute decisively to the energies of the intramolecular bonding in diamondoid dimers. From the temperature dependencies of the NMR spectra the information on the dynamic behavior of dimers was obtained. It was also demonstrated that the values obtained with DFT-methods accounting dispersions correlate well with experimental values. The functionalizations of diamondoid dimers to give mono-, and symmetric as well as asymmetric bis-derivatives were performed.
