Essay

The features оf skull formation in Natrix natrix at successive stages of normal embryogenesis are investigated. The time of appearance of all cartilaginous and bone structures' primordia is revealed, dynamics of its development are described. The vestiges of ancestral membranous skull or chondrocranium are described. It is revealed that the polar cartilages in grass snake's chondrocranium are basic elements, the peculiarities of some cartilaginous structures' formation are discovered. The chondrocranium features, associated with cranial kinesis are reviled. The complex origin of some bones in grass snake's skull is improved.
