The thesis deals with the research of gender category in the historical development of the English language of three periods: Old English, Middle English, Early New English. An integrated approach to the study of the category using synchronic, diachronic, cognitive, semantic, distributional, frame, contextual, and quantitative analyses has been suggested in the paper. The means and the levels of gender expression of nouns as well as the dynamic of their productivity in the history of the English language have been revealed and described on the basis of 41 763 text fragments analysed. Especial emphasis in the work is made on gender correlations in texts of the VII–XVII centuries.
