Essay

The research is focused on studying Jewish-American literature of the second half of the 20th century. The extent and criteria of this notion are defined in the thesis. The problem of alienation in American literature of the 20th century and its realization in the works of Jewish-American writers are considered. Ethnic peculiarities of Jewish-American literature are characterized. The notion of "American dream" is studied in the works of Jewish-American writers and in the works of Ph. Roth in particular. The role and place of marginal character in author's works is defined. The phenomenon of 'American dream' as the base of America's image in writer's novels is analyzed. "American dream" phenomenon, which is typical for American culture in Ph. Roth's works undergoes transformation too. In the context of generation gap between grandfathers/fathers/children the author depicts the youngest generation overcoming conservatism, utopian optimism of fathers. "American Pastoral" demonstrates the destruction of "American dream" myth on the example of one Jewish-American family. At the same time novel "The Plot against America" shatters capital ideas of American world. The hallmark of Ph. Roth's author's method is that in his works national (American) and ethnic (Jewish) cultural models come into interaction and obtain their unique content.
