Essay

The present dissertation is devoted to Turkish special language of diplomacy and is the first of this kind as studied on lexical, syntactic and textual functioning levels. The empirical base of the thesis is encyclopedias and diplomatic explanatory dictionaries, bilingual and multilingual translation dictionaries, publications in the Internet and mass-media, materials from the state archives and various diplomatic documents. In order to obtain reasoned results there were used general scientific and purely linguistic methods of research. The thesis touches upon some theoretical issues of definition of such concepts as "term", "terminology", "terminological system", "language for special purposes" and "specialized text", defines the factors that led to the formation of Turkish diplomatic terminology, describes the ways of terms formation and assesses their productiveness parameters. Research on the above mentioned subject also studies lexical-semantic features of Turkish diplomatic terminology, reviews stylistic, syntactic and morphological peculiarities of diplomatic specialized texts and determines the level of their terminological frequency and saturation.
