This thesis presents the study of main components and approaches to elaborate the national question in the theories of Austro-Marxism. Main attention is focused on the study of the key points in the national concept peoposed by Otto Bauer and Karl Renner. Internal (socio-political, economic, social) and external factors that led to the importance of the national question for the Austrian socialist movement in the late nineteenth - early twentieth century are analyzed. The concept of "nation" in the theoretical heritage of Otto Bauer and Karl Renner is elaborated; main stages and components of the national development, proposed within the theories of Austro-Marxism, are analyzed. Reasons for classical Marxist definitions in the national sphere to be revised are listed; main approaches to national development proposed within the European socialist movement are contrasted and compared. The concept of cultural and national autonomy, developed within the theory of Austro-Marxism, is analyzed in a broader context aimed to distinguish national and state levels. Basic theoretical concepts of extraterritorial autonomy are defined; main ideas to introduce the idea of personal autonomy, formulated in the early twentieth century, for contemporary political conditions are proposed.
