Essay

The interpretation of extralinguistic facts about contacts of the Korean culture to compare them with linguistic data was made. The correlation of lexico-etymological and phonetico-typological evidences about proximity of Korean to other languages, Altaic and non-Altaic (Uralic, Dravidian, Indo-European, Paleo-Asiatic, Austro-Asiatic, Austronesian), was studied, with special focus on non-Altaic parallels. Distinctive phonetic features of Korean were defined and their relationships to those of Nivkh (Gilyak) and the Chukchi-Kamchatkan languages backed by lexical evidences were revealed. There parallels were interpreted as substrate influence of the Chukchi-Kamchatkan languages on Korean and common component of Korean and Nivkh.
