Essay

In the dissertation the process of formation and evolution of the visions of the Black Sea region in Ukrainian historical, social, and political works of the late XIX - early XX centuries are scrutinized. This study confirms that the construction of the image of the Black Sea region in Ukrainian thought has taken place in the context of the delimitation with the Russian imperial tradition situating this region in the framework of New Russia. The characteristic features and tendencies of the evolution of the Black Sea region image in the works by Ukrainian historians and public activists of the XX century are revealed. The peculiarities of the interpretation of the Black Sea region in the contemporary secondary school textbooks in the history of Ukraine are analyzed. It is concluded that the position of the Black Sea region in the hierarchy of the Ukrainian scholars' research interests was marginal in comparison with other regions.
