Essay

The dissertation investigates lingual-cognitive and functional-pragmatic characteristics of precedent-related phenomena in American media discourse. The lingual-cognitive features of precedent-related phenomena are studied through their role in the process of verbalization of concepts and their impact on the cognitive image of concepts through conceptual metaphors. The functional-pragmatic features of precedent related phenomena are explored through a relevance theory framework, which enables us to analyze the interpretative chain in the meaning construction process in utterances; the main functions of precedent-related phenomena in American media discourse are defined.
