Polishchuk O. Nominative and Communicative Aspects of Proxemic Actions Designation in Modern English Discourse: A Study of Late 20th Century Fiction

This thesis offers a definition of proxemics in terms of the synergetic theory and identifies a functional status of the non-verbal component of "proxemic actions". The corpus of English designations of proxemic behaviour has been elucidated with the highlight on their semantic features. Deictic locative essence of proxemic communication has been clarified; typology of sentences with locative semantics in modern English has been established. The research outlines strategic and tactical repertoire of speakers’ proxemic behaviour within the theory of speech accommodation and stipulates the role of proxemic deictics in the English fiction discourse from a pragmatic perspective.
