Essay

The thesis is the first attempt in the Ukrainian literary criticism to research the features of Expressionism and its national singularity in Austria on the basis of Gustav Meyrink's prose. The Expressionistic vector of artistic thinking determines the characteristics of narrative organization in G. Meyrink's prose (counter-discourse strategies, the technique of "unreliable" narration, variable focalization, metalepsis), the selection of themes and problems (the topos of the City, the antiwar pathos, "rebellion against fathers", the motive of gender confrontation and so on), as well as the range of expressive means (affective rhythmization, synesthetic updating of language, depersonalization, etc.) in the author's prose. G. Meyrink's artistic world operates on the principles of transgression and transmutation which determine the singularity of the writer's Expressionism as a specific way of world reproduction.
