Morgunova O. Causative Possessive Verbs in English and Ukrainian.

The thesis is the first comparative investigation of causative possessive verbs in English and Ukrainian. The definition of causative possessive verbs as one of the types of possessive verbs which mean the transference of an object into the possession of another person in English and Ukrainian is suggested in the thesis. These are such verbs as to give / давати, to pay /платити etc. The criteria of causative possessive verbs identification in English and Ukrainian are suggested in the paper. The research has resulted in the semantic classification of causative possessive verbs which includes verbs lacking features specifying the action character and ones which have these features. The semantics of causative possessive verbs is described with the usage of the interpretation formulae. The types and subtypes of possessive objects combined with causative possessive verbs are determined. The classification of the ways of possessive object realization is developed from the point of view of its presence or absence: explicit and implicit. Stylistic peculiarities of causative possessive verbs in English and Ukrainian are investigated. Ukrainian causative possessive verbs are characterized mainly by the neutrality of their stylistic usage. In English the stylistic diversity is traced in the group of causative possessive verbs denoting the transference of an object for some payment. Universal and peculiar features characterizing the semantics of causative possessive verbs in the languages under analysis are singled out.
