Essay

The subject is Julian Barnes' prose. The aim is an investigation of poetics and semantics of Barnes' work. The methods of the research are historical and literary, philological, linguistic and stylistic, intertextual, interdisciplinary analysis, the New Historicism principles, receptive criticism. The presented research is the first attempt in the Ukrainian literary criticism that provides the complex analysis of Julian Barnes' prose as an integral poetical-and-semantic system. Barnes' work is explored in the context of the genre postmodernist experiments' evolution and their realization in the second wave of English postmodernism. Forms of the genre synthesis are examined in Barnes' work within the subgenres of fictional historiography, new biography, neo-Victorian novel, romance of the archive, literature within the literature. The focus of the investigation is the authors' individual poetics as а form of fictional practice of the New Historicism. New aspects of the interior characterization are determined and analyzed in Barnes' "modern life novels". The scope is learning process.
