Essay

Encyclopedic component as a part of all levels of English language linguistic dictionaries. Aim to present the history of dictionary work from the first Greek and Roman manuals to the lexicographic practice of the day, with the focus on the importance/presence of encyclopedic information in the entry of a non-encyclopedic dictionary. Novel and original are the theory of the author about the presence of some information about the position/role of the defined word in the map of the human world. Methods used are those of analysis of lexicographic definition, comparative/contrastive, descriptive.
