Essay

The thesis represents a complex study of multicultural discourse within postmodern prose by a contemporary French writer of Maghrebian origin Tahar Ben Jelloun. On the basis of up-to-date philosophical, esthetical, socio-cultural and literary methodologies, polyculturality is regarded as a fundamental poetical, epistemological and conceptual feature of the author's works at different periods. The provided analysis includes such genres as novel, short story and novella; it also contextually concerns writer's early poetry. In a range of the chosen works, different modes of cultural interaction - cross-, poly-, multi- and transculture are examined as well as their polysemantics and polyfunctionality are highlighted. The research substantiates that listed modes make a profound impact on poetics of the author's works and define range of problems included in writer's postmodern text at the every level - structural, formal, receptive and pragmatical.
