Essay

This dissertation focuses on the analysis of the grammatical organization of lexical units denoting space and time in Modern English. Systemic character of semantic interrelation of lexical units which express spatiality and temporality in the English language is explained via semantic field modelling. This model explicates hierarchy in the grammatical organization of the analyzed units as well as their synonymic or antonymic relationship. It has been proved that polysemy of some lexical units is the result of the overlaying of temporal and spatial semes in their semantic structure. The research outlines 166 lexical units in which the interrelationship of spatiality and temporality is registered and among which 75 lexemes form the kernel. The interrelation between spatial and temporal semantic features in the semantic structure of lexical units is revealed through the points of intersection which is caused by 12 common and 5 distinguishing semantic features. Key words: space, time, spacious and temporal lexemes, semantic structure, lexico-semantic fields, kernel, periphery, field interaction and interrelationship.
