Essay

The paper focuses on linguocognitive mechanisms underpinning nominative units with a numerical constituent (NUNC). The analysis of data employs linguistic findings of the theory of naming in its traditional and cognitive versions, and psychological findings of the mapping theory. The major scientific methods are conceptual modeling, formal modeling and quantitative analysis. The scientific novelty of the research is determined by the systemic analysis of the conceptual and formal aspects of the NUNC: the paper seeks to identify conceptual models of the NUNC; to determine formal models of the NUNC and to group them within formal types; to reveal correlation of conceptual and formal aspects of the NUNC involving the notion of cognitive mapping. The theoretical significance of the paper is determined by its contribution to the traditional theory of naming and word formation, the cognitive theory of naming and cognitive linguistics. The practical value of the obtained results lies in the possibility to apply them in teaching lexicology of the English language (themes "Word formation", "Semasiology", "Onomasiology"), English grammar ("Parts of speech"), general linguistics ("Language and thought"), courses in cognitive linguistics and word formation, as well as in the process of writing research papers of different levels.
