The thesis identifies the peculiarities and the evolution of the fictional space in H. James' novels. The investigation is based on the methodological principles of the poetics of spatiality and the spatial form (J. Frank, M. Bakhtin, Yu. Lotman, V. Toporov). H. James' poetical strategy has been determined as the system of means and methods of the text organization as a spatial structure due to the interaction of factors such as reduction of plot, fragmented temporal structure, diffusion of voices and focuses of narrator and characters, readers' reception. The signs and patterns of spatiality in H. James' novels have been identified: the modeling techniques of the space, the peculiarities of the interaction of author's spaces and characters, the specificity of the space vision. The mechanisms of interference between narrator's and character's discourse, the narrative forms of subjectivity, the ways to offset focalization from narrative pole to personal have been characterized. The spatial organization of H. James' works during the author's creative evolution has changed. This was manifested in complication of the fictional structure, the dominance of the space of consciousness, combining multi-temporal plans of action and points of view, the erosion of the functional status of the narrator.
