The thesis focuses on studying systemic, structural, contrastive and typological aspects of paradigmatic lacunarity in the English and Ukrainian languages. The theoretical and methodological fundamentals for researching paradigmatic lacunarity in modern linguistics have been generalized. New methodology of contrastive analysis on paradigmatic lacunarity within one part of speech has been introduced. Structural principles and methods for systemic linguistic description of paradigmatic lacunarity have been identified. The nature of intralingual and interlingual paradigmatic lacunarity has been revealed. The typology of paradigmatic lacunarity based on the inner form of a word and the components of lexical meaning has been suggested
