Essay

Thе dissertation describes effects of canopy position differentiation within natural spruce forest stands in the Ukrainian Carpathians on morphological characteristics and aboveground biomass in mature spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) trees. It is estimated that social differentiation of trees significantly affected (p <0.05) basic density of wood and bark of a stem, mean annual increments of their morphological characteristics and biomass, and the overall aboveground biomass values. The aboveground components of the tree biomass were evaluated in relation to its mass and percentage, and vertical distribution of the biomass within the tree was calculated also. Additional statistical analyze of 43 biometric values and environmental factors influencing the tree biomass was completed. Finally, 96 regression models were constructed for the estimation of biomass in spruce trees and for their aboveground components, as well as, for the sequestered amount of carbon in the aboveground tree part.
