Essay

This dissertation focuses on the analysis of English medical terms in the literary communication on the basis of the integrative approach and methods of cognitive linguistics and pragmatics. The research suggests frame and field models of the term-concept MEDICINE, which reflect the influence of the pre-scientific period of the medical science development on the formation of additional meanings of the term medicine; it reveals the ways of metaphorization of medical terms in the literary communication influenced by sensory perception of the denotation, social experience, plot etc. The research also presents the conventional metaphors of the medical science registered in the lexicographic resources, which denotes the fixation of the pragmatic meaning of the medical term in the term-concept structure; it determines communicative strategies used by the author to activate and deactivate the pragmatic meaning of medical terms in order to manipulate the reader's perception of medical terms in the process of literary communication. Key words: medical term, medical term-concept, literary communication, cognitive pragmatics, conventional metaphors of the medical field of science, pragmatic meaning of medical term, communicative strategy, irony.
