Essay

The traditional vocal ritual song repertoire of the Northern Pidlyashya, - a marginal North-Western Ukrainian ethnic region, now a part of Poland, - is studied in the presented dissertation. This area is of particular importance to the ethnological studies because it is a borderland not only of the Ukrainian ethnic area, but also of the entire East Slavic extent. Based on the author's field records, published studies, and archive collections, the study reveals the most used ritual melodic types, establishes their geographic coverage, and dialect hierarchy. Ethno-musical and culturological aspects of the folklore functioning is studied. The author makes a few ethnogenetic and historical culturological hypotheses.
