The dissertation researches the functions of parallelism in the Chinese poetry of the Tang Dynasty epoch (618-907 A.D.) as well as reveals the essence and specific features of parallelism as a phenomenon of Chinese language. The scientific research in question highlights types and functions of parallelism in folk and authors’ poetry of different peoples; it investigates different research works from the sphere of linguistic and literary criticism that analyze this phenomenon. The peculiarities of creating and functioning of parallelism in Chinese folk poetry are viewed. The impact of extralinguistic factors (i.e. yin-yang concept) on origin and development of parallelism in Chinese language is studies thoroughly. Different types of parallelism, their peculiarities in terms of structure and origin as well as specific functions of this stylistic phenomenon have been analyzed and studied in the poetry that appeared before the Tang Dynasty epoch. The dissertation highlights general stylistic peculiarities of the poetry of the Tang Dynasty epoch. It has been traced that different types of parallelism that were usual in the poetry that appeared before the Tang Dynasty epoch have become the cornerstone of the poetry of the Tang Dynasty epoch; in addition to that the dissertation describes and studies the functions of this phenomenon in the poems of different periods within the Tang Dynasty epoch: the Early Tang poetry, the Prime Tang poetry, the Mid Tang poetry and the Late Tang poetry. The research work investigates the influence of parallelism functions on phonetic peculiarities and verse composition of the Tang Dynasty epoch; the thesis defines the criteria of lexical unit choice for creating parallelism; it finds out that the criteria underwent almost no changes from the times of folk poetry. The dissertation in question gives the most careful attention to studying explicit and expended types of parallelism and to its specific functions in the poetry of the Tang Dynasty epoch.
