Essay

This dissertation addresses issues of English economic discourse in a cognitive-pragmatic perspective. One of its inherent features, expressiveness, is described in the framework of modern theories of discourse. Expressiveness is understood as a non-neutral mode of exposition which serves as a means of achieving authors' pragmatic goals and objectives, helps to highlight main points, accentuate details, intensify author's argumentation and activate reader's attention. According to the obtained data the means of expressiveness represented in economic texts are divided into four types: verbal (phonetic, lexical, syntactic, and contextual) and visual. Being a type of scientific discourse, economic discourse has its specificity: it is highly expressive that can be explained by authors' wish to accentuate important details, to help recipients to decode the information, and to demonstrate the author's viewpoint. Economic discourse is a heterogeneous phenomenon within which we distinguish four types: academic, didactic, reference, and popular science. Each type is characterized by its specific set of expressive means. It is emphasized that economic discourse is characterized by the convergence of means of expressiveness, i.e. the complex of the means of expressiveness which helps to promote the same idea, emotion or motive. Key words: discourse, discourse types, scientific discourse, English economic discourse, expressiveness, means of expressiveness, strategies and tactics of intensification of expressiveness.
