The dissertation covers the urgent environmental problem of accumulation of aviation kerosene lenses within military airfields in Ukraine. This thesis describes hydrogeological conditions of accumulation of LNAPL lenses within military airfields in Ukraine including conditions of LNAPL entering into the subsurface, physical and chemical properties of LNAPLs and LNAPL migration paths in the subsurface, lithological and hydraulic properties of the unsaturated zone, and aquifer patterns. Based on the experimental results, the procedure of detection of LNAPL layer (in the capillary zone or on a groundwater table) and LNAPL contents in different zones of a lens by a known LNAPL thickness in a well was substantiated. As a case study of the aviation kerosene lens within military airfield near Nikolaev city, distribution of kerosene contents and volumes in the lens, hydraulic water and kerosene properties by well pumping, and predicting parameters of liquidation pumping were determined. The results of the research were used to develop the projects of liquidation of aviation kerosene lenses within military airfields in Nikolaev and Uman. The results can be applied to environmental and hydrogeological research and liquidation works at other LNAPL lenses.
