Essay

The thesis is devoted to a comprehensive study of the position of the Russian Orthodox Church during Nicholas I's reign. The description of the authority of the Holy Synod and organizational modifications in its structure which occurred in the second quarter of the 19th century is given. The activity of the Ober-Procurators is analyzed. The attribute of the diocesan administration is presented. Special attention is paid to the role of the Metropolitan Philaret of Moscow (Drozdov) in the system of the ecclesiastical management. The legal, economic and social status of the clergy of the second quarter.
