Essay

The thesis investigates the bandura art in the twentieth century, in the gender context. The author accomplishes the analysis and assesses female bandura art through personal and collective practices in Ukraine and the diaspora during the twentieth century. Due to historical circumstances three stages of feminization in the Ukrainian bandura art are distinguished. The author highlights the little known facts of the first female bandura performers - О. Levadna, L. Barvinok, М. Grebenyuk-Darmanchuk, E. Lemish, G. Bilogub-Vernygir as well as the work of famous contempo-rary bandura players - L. Posikira, О. Herasymenko, G. Menkush, G. Toporovska, L. Mandzyuk.
