Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the investigation of the Ukrainian musical Romanticism as a national-style form of European Romanticism. The paper reveals the dynamics of romantic style by the example of the evolution of piano genres in the 19th century – the beginning of the 20th century: mazurka, waltz, nocturne, elegy, songs without words, and the genre of piano rhapsody in the context of European Romanticism. According to the results of the research the evolution of Ukrainian Romanticism was founded on organic interaction between Ukrainian national style peculiarities and other national style components. Creating the samples of various genres, Ukrainian composers headed for the consistent genre models that were elaborated in creative work of West-European and Russian romantics and for their stylistics, leant on the genre-tonal sources of Ukrainian folklore and rethought specific artistic tendencies of the epoch in the light of national musical disposition. The creation of the Ukrainian genre forms of nocturne, elegy, song without words, rhapsody, which are the bright achievements of Romanticism in native and European music, in the creative work of M. Lysenko and S. Lyudkevych was the peak in the dynamics of romantic style in Ukrainian piano music in the 19th century – the beginning of the 20th.
