Essay

The objective of the thesis is determination of functional and pragmatic characteristics of communicative silence in Japanese culture. The thesis identifies the meanings of silence as the element of communication, as well as its universal and culturally-marked functions; provides an overview of the main approaches used in silence-related linguistic studies; specifies the relation between silence and the main features of the Japanese communicative behavior, determines illocutions of silence, as well as the factors of the status of silence within the Japanese culture. Conceptual status of silence, as well as its correlation with the major concepts of the Japanese culture are being analyzed.
