Lastovska O. Orthodox monasteries and monks in Ukraine: modern Ukrainian historiography

This dissertation is a comprehensive study of modern Ukrainian historiography of Orthodox monasteries and monks in Ukraine. It contains analysis of the problem's historiography, defines the key historiographic groups of sources, and explains their classification. This work provides the insights into the key modern stages of the historiographic process in study of history of monasteries and monks. It proves that Ukraine has specific centers and directions for research and points at the absence of scientific schools. At the same time, studies of history of monasteries and monks have a clear regional nature, which also impacts the formation of scientific centers. However, this regional nature exhibits in the unity with the Ukrainian-wide historiological process. Furthermore, studies of history of monasteries are closely related to scientific areas of non-historical nature such as philosophy, medicine, tourism and art. Absence of comprehensive historical study of history of monasteries and monks has been defined to remain one of problems for the modern historical science.
