The dissertation is dedicated to improving the treatment of patients with moderate ulcerative colitis with concomitant subclinical atherosclerosis by studying the pathogenic relationship of lipid metabolism, inflammatory activity, structural and functional condition of the arteries and differential prescribing of statins in combination with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. For the first time in this dissertation the general cardiovascular risk was assessed, different pathogenetic mechanisms of subclinical atherosclerosis in patients with ulcerative colitis was examined and the pathogenic role of CRP levels in structural and functional features of atherosclerotic process was identified. For early diagnosis of subclinical atherosclerosis in ulcerative colitis patients, it is advisable to determine the carotid intima-media thickness and ankle-brachial index. It is proven that prolonged extension of P wave dispersion and QT interval as predictors of life-threatening arrhythmias directly correlated with the pro-atherogenic lipids level and disease activity. To prevent subclinical atherosclerosis progression in ulcerative colitis patients, it is appropriate to combine statin in submaximal doses with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids.
