Essay

The thesis identifies the peculiarities of the existential type of artistic consciousness in Joseph Conrad's works. Conrad's poetics has been determined as the system of cross motifs and images connected with the acute experience of passing life, ontological, epistemological, social, intimate uncertainty of a human being (darkness, fear, fright, loneliness, choice, ennui, despair, etc.). The plots of Conrad's works are caused by human's collision with vigour that exceeds its individual ability. However, this plot is concealed with the description of various genres (travelling, adventure, picaresque, marine) and implicitly presented in chronotopical, narrative and paradigm. In Conrad's works anachronistical principle of narrative organization and permanent focalized commutings produce the discursive tension of the text and show the ambiguity of the author's view on the dynamics of civilized processes and the essence of the existential phenomenon of a human being, its uncertainty and elusiveness.
