Shahin A. Specificity of Istanbul text in the short stories by Sait Faik Abas?yan?k

The thesis suggests a new systemic approach to the study of specificity of the "Istanbul text" and the theme of "insular mentality" as its modification in the short stories by Sait Faik Abas?yan?k. The paper introduces methodological means for analyzing "Istanbul text" in the writer's creative works: the application of historical-genetic, comparative-typological and cultural-historical methods afforded an opportunity to reveal the specificity of formation and further elaboration of certain thematic complexes in the writer's emotive prose (such as the "Istanbul text" in the short stories under consideration and the theme of the characters' "insular mentality" in them). The research reviews the current stage of analysis of Sait Faik Abas?yan?k's prosaic works in modern studies of literature. It identifies basic parameters of "Istanbul text" in the writer's short stories: the theme of solitude in a big city, the images of urban characters. The spatial-temporal structure of the stories is interpreted from the angle of its role in forming the "Istanbul text" in the short stories by Sait Faik Abas?yan?k. Special regard is given to identification of the border lines of the theme of "insular mentality" as modification of the theme of "Istanbul text" in the writer's short stories, as well as to specific artistic devices and means of the theme's creation along with functions of "insular mentality" in the texts. Among the methods applied in the thesis are the cultural-historical method and the method of literature hermeneutics. The detailed analysis of structural peculiarities and semiotics of artistic means as constituents of the author's poetics preconditions the necessity of the structural-semiotic method being applied. The method of aspect analysis of a literary work is used to identify and characterize devices of visual and audio poetics, interpretation of symbols and chronotope structure of the stories under study. The paper specifies the concepts "Istanbul text", "insular text", "insular mentality", their content and structural aspects. The applied aspect analysis of the works by Sait Faik Abas?yan?k makes it possible to define and describe means of visual and audio poetics, to interpret the symbols and chronotope structure of the author's short stories.
