Essay

The paper focuses on the impact of the deviations from standard pronunciation of English vowels and consonants on the phonetic intelligibility of an utterance in the English aviation radiotelephony discourse. The phonemic and phonetic features of the pronunciation accent in the English speech of Ukrainian air traffic controllers and pilots have been determined, among which typical deviations from standard pronunciation of vowels and consonants in their speech have been distinguished. The negative impact of typical deviations from English standard pronunciation, which can upset phonologic oppositions, on the correct interpretation of the utterance has been established. It has been found that disturbances in the phonologic oppositions in the consonantal system caused more misinterpretation of utterances in the discourse under analysis than pronunciation deviations in the vocalic system. It has been shown that native English speakers understand Ukrainians' accented speech a little worse than non-native speakers. The dependence between intelligibility and the pronunciation accent, which is displayed in a decrease in the average indicators of intelligibility when the speech quality deteriorates, has been described.
