Essay

This thesis explores the phenomenon of polyphony, the problem of its origin and the use of polyphonic forms in the literature. The imitations of musical polyphony are analyzed as well as the influence of different beliefs, traditions and world views. The aim of the first chapter is to determine the polyphony and to analyze its evolution from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. According to J. A. Winn's hypothesis, the term "polyphony" comes from the medieval mystic conceptions about the eternal simultaneous coexistence of the characters of the Old and the New Testaments.
