Essay

The dissertation is devoted to analysis of the work of the Diaspora's scientific institutions, famous researcher's contribution in historical branches of science, especially in heraldry and genealogy during 1945 - middle 1970s. Ukrainian scholars continued researching heraldry and genealogy during 1946-1949 in Germany. In 1946 the first Ukrainian Genealogy Group (UGG) was founded. It included the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogic Studies (IHGS) that published the newspaper. The published articles and research findings of the periodical had a high general level as the authors were such Ukrainian scholars of heraldry and genealogy as M.Bytynsky, V.Senyutovych-Berezhnyi, M.Miller, V.Sichinskyi, and O.Ohloblyn. There is evidence that the scholars paid explicit attention to studying national state symbols, genealogy of Volyn nobility and outstanding representatives of Ukrainian culture, theoretical basis and terminology of heraldry. The fifth and sixth copybooks of the newspaper that were prepared for publishing are proved to have had important for Ukrainian heraldry and genealogy materials which are kept in E.Arkhipenko's Archive and Columbia University in the City of New York now. After the UGG and IHGS ceased working the problems of Ukrainian heraldry and genealogy were studied by M.Bytynskyi, V.Senyutovich-Berezhnyi, and O.Ohloblyn during 1952-1963. The analysis of the above mentioned scholars' works in the field of Ukrainian heraldry and genealogy shows that they differed by their thoroughness, high information content, rich actual material, and deep analysis of the range of issues on the basis of many sources and special literature. Despite the fact that these scholars had no real opportunity to work with the archives their works are more fundamental than the soviet scholars' ones. In July 1963 the Ukrainian Genealogy and Heraldry Society (UGHS) was founded similarly to Western heraldic institutions. The Society functioned in difficult conditions of that time because most of Ukrainian scholars had to rely on their own funds. During eight years of its work the Society has united 157 members from many countries of the world and made contacts with many Ukrainian and foreign scientific institutions. The most active representatives of the UGHS were three well-known scholars of heraldry ? M.Bytynskyi, R.Klymkevych, and V.Senyutovych-Berezhnyi. A rich practical work experience of these Ukrainian scholars contributed to the popularization of the Society's activity not only in the Ukrainian Diaspora in the USA and Canada, but also in many other countries. The UGHS studied several directions - the urban and territorial heraldry, the national state symbols, making family coats of arms, flags, seals, providing methodical recommendations. The Society published such periodicals as "The Bulletin", "The Additions" and "The Notes of the UGHS". The main purpose of "The Additions" that was a part of the "The Bulletin", was to teach the members of UGHS to design coats of the arms according to the historical tradition and the canons of heraldry. The "Additions" was published as "The Notes to the Ukrainian heraldic terminology" during 1965-1967, that actually was the first attempt of the UGHS to study Ukrainian terminology of heraldry. In the "The Notes of the UGHS", published in 1969-1972 there was the edition of "Bibliographic index of the Ukrainian emblems", that counted a number of theses, articles, and reference literature on the Ukrainian heraldry, genealogy, sphragistics, numismatics, and vexillology. It is worth outlining "The scientific journal" and "The guide on the coats of arms of Ukrainian cities" that were among the planned but unrealized publishing projects of the UGHS. Thus, the complex study of Ukrainian scientific institutions and societies, research data of the Diaspora scholars provides an exciting opportunity to advance our knowledge that they made a major contribution to continuing the tradition of heraldic research, broadening their research field and the integration in the world science.
