Essay

This dissertation focuses on revealing the specific features of the imagery of the English Poetic Discourse of the XXI century in linguistic, cognitive, communicative and pragmatic perspectives. It suggests a comprehensive methodology for exposing discursive properties of imagery in the frameworks of cognitive and pragmatic paradigm of linguistics. It has been proved that metaphor, metonymy and metabole show up their utmost discursive potential. It is maintained the discursive property of metaphor is based on narrative mapping; discursive metonymy is characterized by the referent which exists in discourse. Unlike traditional metaphor and metonymy which are based on analogical mapping, discursive metaphor and metonymy are the result of parabolic thinking and story mapping. Metabole incorporates both metaphor and metonymy and its discursive property is determined by the transitive concept which is actualized in the discursive practice. It is argued that communicative and pragmatic functions of imagery ensure the perlocutionary effect on the reader and justify social and political orientation of contemporary English and American poetic discourse. Key words: imagery, imagery means, metaphor, metonymy, metabole, associations, motif, concept, antiterrorist motifs, ecological motifs, the motifs of war, communicative-pragmatic functions.
